Life That Changes the Rhythm
- lifercize not exercise
- cooking together again,
- slowing down,
- simple ingredients,
- satiety,
- feeling restored,
- kitchen as gathering place.
Everywhere I turned there was a buy it now before it gets canceled or if you don’t have this you may not have or be your best. From 30 minute authoritative sounding infomercials to thirty second ads from some pharmaceutical company (recommended by people wearing a white lab coat and a stethoscope), to say I was overwhelmed and confused is no understatement. It all seems like either bribery or extortion to me = profit for them, but not so profitable for me.
Like many, I turned to supplements because, “they say” even our food does not contain the nutrients they once had. We call this “processed food“. These have become like chemicals to me and I can’t take them anymore. Weight loss, high blood sugar and high blood pressure are everywhere. So, I decided to turn off all of the noise and go back to simplicity. I remember a family Doctor years ago that commented about vitamins and minerals. Like it was yesterday, I can still hear him say, “Well if you want expensive urine go ahead, otherwise just eat right.”
Eating right to me today means eating as clean as possible, avoiding processed food and using organic whole source, chemically free— fruits, vegetables and meats, where ever possible.
This brings me to another thing I heard in my youth from a gym teacher. Burn more calories than you consume and you will lose weight. I wondered what Jesus Christ ate growing up or what they ate in the first century. I was amazed to find that unless you were wealthy, you only ate twice a day. So I have begun doing this. Slowly, I am losing weght and my body and metabolism are slowly adopting. It is not hard. Neither Susan nor I are ever hungry. Did I say I am cooking again? I am and a lot. Neither Susan and I mind at all. Both of us are always surprised what I come up with and so quickly. Cleanup is usually pretty fast too. It’s all win-win.
There is more to health than just the food we eat and losing wight. We also need to build or at least maintain activity and muscle strength and flexibility. Believe it or not, I once not long ago, worked out 6 days a week. Guess what, my body was trying to tell me that it could not sustain this and I kept going, running off of adrenaline and crashing. I was not recovering. So now under good company, I only do three times per week, know when I have done too much or not enough and keep myself active when not working out. Sometimes, I just must push away from this computer and go outside and walk. Even Lady dog appreciates this. And I am in great company. A man I dearly admire is, Dick Van Dyke. He turned 100 on my birthday, December 13, 2025. He works out three times a week. In his own words, “I’ve always exercised three days a week.”
Ted Danson also recalled that Van Dyke would literally dance from one exercise machine to the next.
So in a nut shell, you have the purpose of this page—Living Simply is Simply Living. And Here I will share what I am learning and even recipes. One last thing, as a trained chef and in writing a cookbook and volumes of original drinks (alcoholic) in ‘Sips with Susan’ how do i square this with that? One is for entertaining or whenever company comes over and the other is for how we live each day. I’m cool with this. 😎 There is no contradiction
